Magdalena Bay is a rich, dynamic fishery with world class fly fishing opportunities inshore, and offshore in the blue water.
Inshore; mangroves, islands, beaches, and flats make up the Bay and are filled with a variety of fish. Roosterfish, golden trevally, and jack crevalle cruise the beaches and flats along with small bonefish and halibut. Snook can be found along the beaches and in the mangroves along with a variety of pargo species. If you hit the weather and tide right, sight casting crabs and baitfish to waking roosterfish on the flats can be an epic experience.
Offshore, from Magdalena Bay, is the best place in the world to target Marlin on the fly. A massive sardine run takes place from October through December, bringing with it a plethora of predators. Marlin, dorado, tuna, whales, sea lions, dolphins, and more all join in on the feast.
Diving birds seen on the horizon send boats racing. The swirling bait balls are being forced up to the surface by these incredible fish, only to be ravaged from above by waiting frigates and pelicans. This frenzy can be quite the spectacle, and a sure sign to get ready to cast to the Marlin slashing through the chaos below the surface.
Marlin aggressively attack the mass of sardines and mackerel with abandon. The action is fast and furious with fish often swimming under and next to the boat. The activity does not end below the surface; Casting, stripping, and setting on a Marlin is about as chaotic as fly fishing gets. Whether you have the necessary skill or not, once you come tight to a fish, the battle is on. Every hookup is a test of your gear, your stamina, and your nerve.
Landing a Marlin on the fly in Magdalena Bay is more than just a catch-it’s an experience that will etch itself into your memory. The combination of wild, untamed energy and raw natural spectacle makes this one of the most thrilling fisheries on the planet. When the line finally goes slack and the fish swims off, you’re left shaking, grinning, and already dreaming of the next cast.
