Magdalena Bay is located on the Pacific side of Mexico's Baja. Made up of hundreds of square miles of uniquely rich marine ecosystem, Magdalena Bay sets the stage for ideal fly fishing opportunities spread across mangroves flats and volcanic islands inshore and steep seafloor shelves offshore.
Difficult to access by all accounts, it has remained a relatively untouched fishery that could easily be considered the Jurassic Park of fly fishing in Baja.
Offshore Fishing
The waters off of Magdalena Bay is THE best place for landing a stripe marlin on fly. Huge bait balls attract teams of marlin, sailfish, dorado and other species. Frigate birds and pelicans soar and dive on bait balls above feeding marlin. Guest fish from 28’ Pangas with high prows built for ocean fishing. The pangas have rear and forward casting platforms with welded casting braces for and aft.
Inshore Fishing
Mangroves: Fish the most extensive mangrove system in Baja, Mexico. Cast flies and plugs into and around mangroves from pangas for snook, grouper , snapper, corvina and a variety of other predatory species.
Beach fishing: Fish from the beach or by panga for roosterfish, jack crevalle, snook, and halibut. Cast flies and spin gear on to flats, outlets and into the surf.
Flats fishing: Tidal currents flush small baitfish and crustacean across sandy flats inside Magdalena Bay. The conditions are reminiscent of Bahamian flats. These flats are some of the most exciting rooster fishing opportunities on the Baja. Guests can sight cast to tailing and waking roosterfish on expansive flats inside the Bay. Golden Trevally, Jack Crevalle and small bonefish can also be found here. We prefer to walk and wade the flats on the right tide but also fish from Pangas in higher water.
While fishing at May Bay guests stay in a boutique hotel and restaraunt that is the closest accommodation available to the most productive offshore fishing areas allowing for short boat runs to start the day. All meals are prepared at the hotel.
FFM is offering one trip option for our 2026 season, a seven (7) nights / five (5) fishing days program for up to fourteen (14) anglers per week. The season runs late October through December, when large schools of baitfish migrate along the coast attracting an incredible abundance of sport fish to the area. On this trip anglers will have the opportunity to fly fish for a variety of inshore and offshore fish species. Inshore, beaches and mangroves support a variety of sport fish species including snook, roosterfish, grouper, halibut and snapper. Offshore, schools of mackerel and sardines attract a variety of pelagic species including marlin, dorado and tuna that attack the bait balls and provide anglers an opportunity of a lifetime to sight cast to feeding big game fish. At the mouth of the bay, huge school of baitfish congregate attracting schools of roosterfish, jacks and other species that will eagerly take a fly.
