Our Story

Our owner, James Shaughnessy, first ventured south of the border over thirty years ago. The fishing experienced inspired him to return for several months every year, first as an angler and for the last 25 years as a guide and outfitter. Throughout the years, we have camped, driven, boated, fished and explored hundreds of miles of Baja coastline in search of untouched beaches patrolled by giant roosterfish and an amazing variety of species.

Fly Fish Mex operates in the Sea of Cortez, a place that French explorer Jacque Cousteau called “the world’s aquarium.” This narrow sea separating Baja California from mainland Mexico is home to over 900 species of fish, thousands of invertebrates and an abundance of dolphins, sea lions and whales. Its rich ecosystem supports some of the world’s densest populations of predatory fish, including billfish, dorado, roosterfish and tuna. Protected from open ocean swell, the Sea of Cortez is almost always fishable within easy striking distance of our lodge. We see many days that are flat calm. Our small corner of The Baja has changed little in the thirty years we’ve been here. Pristine beaches, friendly locals, serene desert solitude and the quality of the fishery keep us coming back. After many years of refining our own personal fishing program, as well as making lasting friendships with local families and guides, we have settled upon our current location. We have positioned ourselves to take advantage of the best fishing possible in the Sea of Cortez whether your preference is surf casting for roosterfish on the beach or targeting billfish offshore. Where fly fishing blue water in other destinations often requires long boat rides in ocean swell, we hook billfish, tuna and dorado within a mile or two of land, optimizing both fishing time and comfort. Our seasoned guides bring generations worth of local knowledge and fish finding talent. Additionally, they are skilled at safe and professional boat handling specifically for fly fishing. Our standard program includes accommodations in an expansive, deluxe lodge, but on request we can arrange for camping expeditions to explore the remote and lesser-known beaches of Baja’s East Cape.
